 Politics bring fortune to some and misfortune to others. The launch of the Praja Rajyam by Megastar Chiranjeevi seems to be turning into a misfortune for an upcoming woman politician in Vijayawada.
M V Rathna Bindu, a Kapu woman, was tipped for Mayoral post in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in 1996. However, local MP, Lagadapati Rajagopal, played his cards and made Muslim woman, Mallika Begum as the Mayor, with a promise to vacate the seat in
two years. The APCC had announced that Rathna Bindu would take over the Mayoral office for the last two years of the VMC term. The two year term of Mallika Begum is set to conclude on 31, October, 2008. However, things have changed with Megastar launching the party. Rathna Bindu’s chances of entering the Mayoral office became gloomy as all of her family members have joined the PRP. The Congress leaders, particularly those from the Lagadapati camp, are arguing that Rathna Bindu would switchover to PRP in the 2010 VMC elections and there is no point in making her the city Mayor. Though Rathna Bindu, a supporter of MLA Vangaveeti Radha Krishna, argues that she would remain with the Congress, there are no buyers to her statement. It is believed that the Congress leaders would prevail upon the APCC leadership to continue Mallika Begum in the Mayoral office and thus woo the Muslim vote bank. It is to be seen how Rathna Bindu and her mentor, Radha Krishna, would react once the October 31, deadline is crossed.
